The server is a Windows binary, so Windows hosting is the least painful path; on Linux it needs Wine plus a persistent xvfb virtual display. server_config.xml cannot be edited while the server runs - restart after every change. Whether port forwarding is required is unproven; a developer reply said traffic may go via Steam. Physics runs server-side on one core, so vehicle complexity usually matters more than player count, and vanilla has no bulk vehicle removal.
